Giving Thanks to God During a Zombie Attack

Posted by Matt on 08.31.09 in Devotionals.

1 Thess 5:18 Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

As humans, we like to complain. We pick out the one thing to complain about while being ungrateful for everything else surrounding the very thing we’re complaining about.

For example, during a zombie attack, you can complain that, well, that there’s a zombie attack. In the past, during all those days where there wasn’t an attack, did you thank God that there wasn’t one? In the present, did you thank God that you have your shotgun? Did you thank God that zombies walk really slowly and make easy targets?

When your car breaks down, in the past, did you thank God all those other times that it was working? In the present, did you thank God that you even have a car that could break down? That you have money to get it repaired?

When someone is annoying or hurtful, in the past were you being thankful to God for the previous times when things were okay? In the present are you thankful for all the other people in your life that aren’t annoying at the moment?

When you lose your job, or are selling your house, or get sick, whatever. In the past, did you thank God for your job, house, health? In the present, what can you be thankful for?

Even if you can’t think of anything, there is one thing to always be thankful for… God is growing your faith. Remember, His goal isn’t that you always have a job or are never sick, or be zombie-free. His goal is the growing of your faith.

He is drawing you closer to Himself, making you more Christ-like. That’s something to always be thankful for.

James 1:2-4 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, [3] because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. [4] Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
