Everybody Else is at first refreshing (a band with no gimic screaming or synthesizers???). But by the fifth song, Born to Do, with its ultra common and boring progression and words "loving you, that's what I was born to do...", their self-titled debut just seemed so desperately...normal. The strength of the LA three piece is also their weakness.
When I say I can't find a "label" for Everybody Else, its not in the "wow, I've never heard anything like this before" sense of the word. Its more like "wow, this is so generic, I don't know what to call it but rock and roll."
While the first four songs were a reasonable best-foot-forward, the rest of the album just gets campy. "Rich Girls, Poor Girls" and the "do-do-do" + cowbell formula of "Makeup" are maddeningly catchy, but just kind of a hollow habit, more like smoking cigarettes than making your bed.
I hate to go here, but Everybody Else sounds just like...
