Cover songs, let alone entire albums, can be a real crapshoot. Either you nail the song(s), make fans of the originals happy, or you tank. There really isn't any room in-between. So when I started listening to "The Anatomy of...” I knew it was a straight 50/50 chance of me liking or hating this new offering from Between the Buried and Me.
While "The Anatomy of..." isn't an album I'd run out to by on my own, I have to give the band credit. When you hear them cover Metallica's "Blackened" on the opening track, you hear a band that nails the song nearly as good as Metallica themselves. BTBAM works their way through some of their biggest influences, including Faith No More, Motley Crue, Smashing Pumpkins, and even Queen.
Between the Buried and Me show that they aren't afraid to handle songs that are obviously outside their genre, and they did the songs justice about as well as anyone could. By covering a wide range of bands and styles, they show how versatile they can be, both musically and vocally. They deserve credit for not taking the songs they love and butchering them with some nu-metal rip off interpretation. For someone who is a fan of this band, I can imagine this would be a must have. Even if you aren't a fan of BTBAM, though, it wouldn't hurt to check this one out, if only to hear how accurately covering someone else's songs can be done.
