Jonah Matranga has been making amazing music for about fifteen years. He has been the front man for some of the best indie rock bands in the past decade. He has been the brain child behind Far, The New End Originals, onelinedrawing and Gratitude. He now has his first solo project out on Equal Vision Records. It is an amazing treat. This CD/DVD combination has just about everything a Jonah fan could want.
The DVD has three different parts. The first part is a live show at The Chain Reaction in Anaheim, Ca. Jonah plays twelve songs with a band and plays some of his best material from OLD and NEO. This is a great look at the rock 'n roll side of Jonah. The second part is a live living room show in Southern California. Jonah plays nine solo songs. It's extremely raw and a light but poweful intimate show. This is a great look at the amazing subtle and personal side of Jonah. The third part is an entire video version for the onelinedrawing album Volunteers. The music videos were all shot by punk rock film/music video director Darren Doane except for "Oh Boys" and "Stay". Jonah did all the drawings for "Oh Boys" and "Stay" was a home movie shot by Jonah's grandfather. Jonah/Far contributed a song to Darren Doane's film Godmoney it still remains one of my all time favorite songs. This is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen when it comes to music and videos. Who does an entire collection of music videos for one of their albums? By the way, Volunteers is my favorite Jonah related album. This third part is an amazing look at the artistic side of Jonah. Also, the third part has commentary from Jonah for all the videos.
The CD is all live material from the DVD. There are six songs from the living room show and six songs from the Chain Reaction show. It's his best material and it's all live and just full of passion and sincerity. It's what makes Jonah amazing! He will do anything for his fans. He understands what it's all about and why we all go to the shows and why we all buy the CDs and Tshirts. He gets it and he gives as much as we will take and then he will give even more. He will always have my respect. I got into Jonah by the way of Far back in 1996 and I will always be into this man's art.
