Social Distortion - Live In Orange County DVD
by Chaz_Murphy; 10.04.04

I wouldn't say that I'm the biggest Social Distortion fan but I do love the band. I have most of their records and I have Mike Ness' solo albums. I loved the style of punk rock they played. They were Punk ROCK. They weren't punk. They were punk rock. I think outside of The Ramones, Black Flag, Minor Threat and The Misfits that they were the most influential United States punk rock band. Mike Ness made the rockabilly look popular within punk rock. My favorite album was "White Heat, White Light, White Trash". It was their most mature and reflective album and their last studio album with Mike Ness, Dennis Danell, John Maurer and Christopher Reece as Social D. They were the heart and soul of the band since 1984 until 1996. Dennis Danell died in 2000 and I honestly felt that they should have just hung it up there. I felt that it would become what "The Misfits" tried to do. They became some cheap comic book band without their cornerstones and Dennis Danell was one of the cornerstones to Social D. A year and a half before Dennis died, Social D. recorded one of the best live albums ever. "Live At The Roxy" is my favorite live album and it was done the right way. They took their best songs from three nights of recording and turned into a punk rock classic. This is where the DVD comes into play. To hear the live album and then to see the DVD was a great disappointment. It was just too odd just to see an aged Mike Ness on stage with only one of his classic counterparts, John Maurer. Mike Ness' voice is shot. It's been six years since their live album and it seems like time has really taken it to Mike's throat. Their live performance seemed to lack passion and just seemed to be a stage act. Of course it's a staged act but it didn't have the improv that most live shows have. Mike did give his respects to Joey Ramone and Joe Strummer though and that was pretty rad.

Here is the set list for the DVD.
1. Making Believe
2. 1945
3. Telling Them
4. Bad Luck
5. Footprints On My Ceiling
6. Don't Drag Me Down
7. I Wasn't Born To Follow

8. Another State Of Mind
9. The Creeps
10. Mommy's Little Monster
11. Mass Hysteria
12. 99 To Life
13. Ring Of Fire
14. Story Of My Life

They played two new songs and a cover of Johnny Cash's "Ring Of Fire" but over all the set list is a disappointment. Where is "Prison Bound", "Ball and Chain" or ever "Cold Feelings"? Mike really didn't take the opportunity to capture the greatness of what was Social D. There were a lot of extras in the DVD but it just wasn't enough. I wish that they would have take past shows and compiled them all together to show the band as it used to be and honor themselves and their former bandmates and fans.

"Live In Orange County" is only the second time that Social D. has been shown on film. The other was in "Another State Of Mind" with Minor Threat and Youth Brigade which was filmed in 1982. The band has released their first album since 1996 and they are out on tour now but they shouldn't be called Social Distortion now. It's only Mike Ness now because John Maurer has left the band. Matt Freeman from Rancid has filled in on bass but it just isn't the same any more. Please just come out with "best of Social Distortion" album and call it quits.
