Super Bowl Weekend, Houston Texas
by Josh_Blackway; 02.09.04

Houston Texas, home of this year's Super Bowl. (a review of the city's festivities):

America loves its sports and rock & roll. That's why every year in late Jan/early Feb, people all around the world (but mostly just Americans) tune in to watch the biggest sporting event of the year. This year, Houston Texas played the host for the billions of eyes that would be watching. On the morning before the Super Bowl, I flew into Houston on a plane from New York that carried many father/son companions, business partners, and crazed fans from New England that all planned to attend the big game. Once arriving in Houston, the airport was filled with Patriots and Panthers fans yelling back and forth at each other. It was unavoidable to think how much more fun this experience would have been for me, had the Eagles been playing... Next year?

So I found some event schedules for the weekend and looked for some good music that night. Sure, I thought, with the biggest game of the year and so many out of towners coming into the city, there would have to be some decent music. Hmm...Molly and the Ringwalds? There's a clever name, but I'm gonna pass. The Handsomes, Sound Advice, The El Orbits...wait, I've never heard of any of these groups! I looked through the list of performers for the whole week and the only ones I recognized were KC & the Sunshine Band and Los Lobos (they did the La Bamba soundtrack), both of whom had already played earlier in the week.
You'd think that the night before the main event that there would be some bigger names on stage. Ok, so i was wrong, the schedule didn't cover everything. There were a few more stages that were not listed in my program. I reluctantly decided to check out Sammy Hagar... you know, "Van Hagar"?

We showed up during the tail end of Eve 6's set, while they were playing they're big hit "Inside Out". That's the only song of theirs that I know so, in the words of Chris Farley, "La-di-frikkin-da!".

Then came the waiting process. This turned out to be the longest intermission between bands that I've ever experienced in my life. Sammy was apparently caught in Houston traffic (which he would later comment on as being "the best f***in' traffic to ever get caught in!", whatever that means).

So just as I'm about to bail out, these rumors start floating around that Aerosmith might be playing a few songs with Sammy. Now, Aerosmith is one of those bands still on my list to see before I die, so I wasn't going anywhere. Finally Sammy hit the stage.

I kid you not... I swear that he was wearing a pair of those pants from the early 90's, I think they're called "Zoomas". It was a sight to see. The crowd shouted along: "There's only ooooone way... to ROCK!" and this red and white zig-zag striped pants guy was the way Houston wanted to rock this night. Not me though. I wanted Aerosmith. Unfortunately, Aerosmith never showed up. They would play before the game the next day, but not for very long at all. So what can I really say about Sammy Hagar? Only one word comes to mind, again: "La-di-frikkin-da!"
The next day was the Super Bowl. I'm not going to review the game itself because I'm sure you all saw it, as well as the half-time strip show, which I'd really prefer not to give any more attention to. I will say that this year's Super Bowl had the worst half time show, musically, that I've ever seen.

Prior to the game though, I spent most of the day at the Houston Convention Center for the "NFL Experience". This was a lot to take in. Acres and acres of football heaven. Celebrities and fans all gathered in and took turns receiving kickoffs, running through training camp drills, taking pictures, and eating Campbell's Chunky Soup. There was so much... and that's really the best way to describe the whole Super Bowl experience: there's so much going on in so many places at once, everybody's individual experience is going to be different.

Reliant Stadium was loaded with security miles around its p
erimeter, as expected, but they did make you feel safe. The fireworks display after the game consisted of a red, white and blue reminder of our freedom.

The Super Bowl is a pretty big deal and Houston dressed its city up nice for the occasion. The music was a letdown, and that might have been expected, but I still had fun. Even if you don't get to go to the game, there's plenty of events going on in a Super Bowl town. I hated the music and I didn't care one snap about either of the teams playing, but Houston made things fun anyway.
