Victory Records used to be a stronghold for the hardcore community. They were the home for such bands as Earth Crisis, Warzone, Shelter, Blood For Blood, Cause For Alarm, Snapcase, Strife and Reach The Sky. Over the years, in not just my opinions but thousands of hardcore enthusiast, they have just completely sold out. It's cool for a label to sign new acts and bands outside of hardcore but when it comes down to trends instead of talent and originality than it's a problem. Every time I hear of a hardcore band signing to Victory, I get agitated. In the back of my mind I know that the band's sound will be changed and this is what a lot of the hardcore scene calls "Victorized". This was true with Comeback Kid, Earth Crisis, Strife and now With Honor. Maybe it has to do with the recording quality over the years or maybe it has to do with a quick fix for quick cash. I have no idea.
With Honor is a good hardcore, please don't get me wrong. It's my opinion that their pop influenced side of their hardcore has just been exploited. They do have a sound similar to Reach The Sky and they were one of my favorite hardcore bands. So their sound really isn't all that bad it's just something that may not be taken seriously for too long. I loved their sound before Victory. They will probably broaden their fan base with their more friendly sound but at the same time they will probably alienate some of their longtime fans and hard line hardcore fans. It's all good. I hope it all works out for With Honor. I just hope their next effort doesn't turn into the screamy pop punk or singy metal fake core that has infected the scene and the Victory bloodline and with the sound of the last song on the album, "In A Bottle" it wouldn't suprise me.
