It has been a good year for Starflyer 59 fans, despite the lack of a new release up to this point. Tooth and Nail released the Neon Horse album, which is rumored to have Starflyer members involved and definitely has the classic Starflyer guitar tone in use. Then we have the new Dark Romantics album, which was produced by Starflyer frontman Jason Martin.
No matter how little or how much Jason Martin contributed to the sound of this album it is hard to avoid the Starflyer comparison. Their guitar tones are fairly comparable to what Jason Martin does with Starflyer, although it is how they compose the guitar lines that most lends itself to Starflyer.
The Dark Romantics, however, are more rock n roll than Starflyer tends to be. Their edge particularly separates in the vocals. Their vocalist doesn't wallow as much in the lower registers, instead frequently going up to a rock enunciation. While the guitars may fool a listener the vocals quickly separate the two artists.
This album doesn't reinvent the wheel, but what it does do it does well. The songs are catchy and move the album along at a good pace. For those who need something to tide them over before a new Starflyer 59 release, The Dark Romantics is a good place to look.
