Here's another one of my deep thoughts.
I don't know if you know this - but we're not God. Yeah, Conrad, duh, of course we're not God. But that's exactly how we try to act when we decide what is considered a sin or not.
Should we date non-Christians? Is drinking allowed? Smoking okay? What sexual things are sins or permitted? How about movies or music? Abortion? Homosexuality? What situations can you disobey your parents?
What are sins? What things are permissible?
Just get into a conversation with a bunch of Christians and I bet you'll get quite a few of them playing God.
You see God is the one who says what's right or wrong. Not us. If it were up to us, hey, we could just decide everything was permissible. Murder, rape, fraud, eating at Burger King, everything.
And how do we figure out what God considers a sin or not? Yeah, the Bible, of course. It's an easy answer. But just cause it's an obvious answer doesn't mean that Christians actually put it into practice. Just go to any Christian message board and you'll see what I mean - do you actually see scriptural support for half of the conjectures? No. You'd be lucky to find one-tenth of the participants with Biblical evidence, you just get a bunch of people playing God.
We're just like everyone else - we like to hear and believe what supports our opinion and ignore what doesn't. You know what? That's not how God wants us to live.
If Christ is our Lord, that means we try to do what he says. We should at least make an attempt to figure out what his will is. But what happens? If we are trying to figure out what is moral, we ask ourselves, "If I were God, what would I think is moral?" We make God into our image.
How can we hope to influence the world for good, when we don't even know what good really is?
The only way to avoid that is to go to the Bible and see what it says and then adhere to it.
It is my hope that we can turn ourselves around from playing God... to listening to him.
Psalm 119:9 How can a young man keep his way pure?
By living according to your word.
119:10 I seek you with all my heart;
do not let me stray from your commands.
119:11 I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.
